Honors societies
Honors societies can be a great way to meet new people in your field, gain valuable leadership skills and boost your resume. There is no simple answer to which honor society you should join, but you should consider which organizations provide opportunities for meaningful experiences, leadership development or scholarships. Simply listing your membership in a society that you have no involvement is not meaningful — your GPA already speaks to your academic ability. If eligible, it may make sense to consider one honors society a year.
Consider if organizations are members of the Association of College Honor Societies. While this is not proof that a particular organization is reputable, the list can help screen the many choices. Two of the more prestigious options available at OSU are:
Phi Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi recruits the top 7.5% of juniors and 10% of seniors to apply and includes a variety of benefits including scholarships
Phi Beta Kappa
Phi Beta Kappa recruits the top 10% of students who have completed 75% or better of their degree with a 3.5 or better and includes a variety of benefits including scholarships. Membership requires breadth in a variety of areas of the arts, natural sciences and social sciences along with some foreign language.
